if you hold the "up" on the directional pad while running, it does not use any of your stamina wheel, but you have to continuiosly tap the run button. it is a little tricky to perform this on controller.

always carry a fire weapon, do not use it on enemy's, do not damage it. very useful to light camp fires, catch grass on fire so you can use the updraft to glide, and many other useful things

use your 2 handed heavy weapons to swing them around to kill mini-bosses. Hinox,Stone Talus, etc.....AVOID ANY LYNELS UNTIL YOU HAVE SOME POWER. They will kill you fast....

This might be obvious, but a lot of people overlook it; upgrade your Runes early, and use them often. A simple bomb can send a silver or gold enemy off a high cliff, to their deaths, quite easily, avoiding an otherwise difficult fight.
An upgraded stasis rune will let you take pesky Bokoblin riders off of their horses with no effort, as well as allow you to freeze a tougher enemy for some much needed space or a chance to shoot them in a weak spot. [This makes mounting Lynels soooo much easier]

Get the DLC. The travel medallion allows you to place your own personal quick-travel marker at your current position, which will save you an INSANE amount of climbing time if you are in a high place you want to continue journeying through, but see something in a valley below that you just don't want to pass up.
The Korok Mask from the DLC will also make your life much easier when it comes to upgrading your inventory.
Collect EVERYTHING that you see. Even trees. Bundles of wood will be needed not just for campfires, but also for a quest later on that will open a secret shop where you can buy rare armors and even the Hylian Shield.[once you've found the original]
