It is certainly possible thanks the the Diddy Kong Racing remake on Nintendo DS. Microsoft seem to be quite open about sharing some characters.

The game was developed and published by RARE so they technically own the entirety of the game except for the character Diddy Kong. Nintendo only distributed the game and lent them Diddy Kong so they could make a game since Banjo-Kazooie was delayed during that time. The least Nintendo could've done was add Diddy to MK8 but I guess not...
