Memory Card is for downloading the additional data. Which is compulsory as the additional data will take up to 16.1GB and for each save data will take 5GB. Unless of course you just want NBA to be the only game in your switch, then no need SD Card.

A memory card is recommended but not compulsory.
You can still play the game but you are limited. There is only "play now" available, it takes you straight there. The rosters aren't updated also.
