u using a 32 bit operating system. you need 64 bits to be able to use more than 3.8gb

Are the ram sticks in dim 2 and 4? If it has 4 slots? Try reseating it

Try cleaning the ram's pin with an eraser. It worked for me a while ago.

Could it be your onboard video card, assuming it has one, was accidently enabled in bios? If not, reseat the RAM.
