Am I the only person who likes to play the least picked heroes in Overwatch? There's less chance if someone stealing ny character, and by that logic, I spend more time practicing that hero. Do it enough times and I might even try them out in comp (as there's always a widow, Genji, mercy / half team instalock)

So nwy characters now ate Lucio, Doomfist, Mei and Zenyatta.

It's a valid train of thought as long as you recognize a hero's strengths and weaknesses and what situations they fit.

There's nothing wrong with any of those characters, and having that in your back pocket or as a first option is never a bad thing. But it is just an option. Sometimes the team calls for something else.
