Unless you're playing the mod that lets you choose how to start, you begin as a prisoner, off to be executed. Therefore you're bound by shackles for the time being. Once you're past the intro you'll be free to roam wherever.

Closest thing to a gun in that game is Ice blast and fireball. Yes it is as awesome as it sounds. Their are other spells that are better but I don't want to ruin the fun.
