I need some advice, regarding conflicting disk drives.

First off, I'm fairly new to PC building.

My PC is a pre-built by PCSpecialist (I know, it's not brilliant) and I had my uncle set it up for me, but I wasn't aware that he disconnected the 1TB HDD until a day or so ago when I opened it up for the first time to clean out the dust.

My PC has been running off a 250GB SSD for about a year now, and naturally my storage space has dwindled over time.

I thought I'd connect the HDD to allow me to have more storage, but that caused some problems:

It seems Windows has already been installed on the HDD as well as the SSD, so they have been conflicting with each other. Each time I start up, I need to open the BIOs and boot into the SSD.

If I disconnect the HDD, the SSD would log me in to the wrong profile. (took me an hour to figure this out, so I had to reconnect the HDD to open BIOs and do the steps I mentioned previously)

I've been told I need to format the HDD but it won't allow me to do so because it is still in use (let me quote: "This drive is still in use. Another program or process is using this drive."

This whole thing is driving me mad lmao. Wishing I never bothered trying to connect the HDD in the first place.

Some help would be greatly appreciated.

How have you survived with only 250gb for a year??

So when your boot from the ssd the hdd still shows as in use? Can you unmount it?

A foolproof way to format it would be to boot Linux from a pen drive and use gparted to format it. None of the internal drives will be in use then. I tend to have a Linux USB to hand so that's easy for me to say, but you should be able to do inside windows if you're not booting from it

Get a new HD and plug it in, also get a USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station. Drop the other drive in and copy stuff over.
