how do I use the destiny 2 companion app? trying to get into groups and have no idea how to join their fireteam.. some have tried to msg me on the app and I cant send anything back.. some say to add them and join team.. but how? this is really frustrating and for a mmo style game its kinda stupid not to have an ingame lfg

The app is just third party. You only use it to find the people then you have to actually add them as a friend on blizzard and join them manually
