How do clans work in Destiny 2? Any big changes from destiny 1? I can still do the most thing as the single player! right? I have planned to not join any clans until I finish everything I can as single player. Are there any extra benefits of joining one early. Only Raids used to need a Fire team etc before. (not counting anything PVP)

You can join a clan whenever and it will rarely change any gameplay experience unless you want it to, you can run through story solo just like normal. Advantages to joining early are clan engrams you get from hawthorn.
