Games like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters and Mortal Kombat would allow you to test your skills against strangers who were close enough to hear you breathe (and perhaps whimper in fright). Respect was won (or sometimes lost) in close proximity to your adversary; something which seems a little odd in today's unashamedly global online arena.
