Can anyone help me out? Brand new laptop bought in December, only used it once a week or so and all of a sudden the screen is black. It hasn't been dropped or stood on either. Plugged it into my monitor and updated everything, also took the battery out and pressed down the power key for a minute to get rid of static.

Press the fn key and the display off key in conjunction and see if that turns on the display. Did you disconnect it from the monitor?

So if you are not connected to other monitor it doesnt work. It works on 2nd monitor . If so monitor is bad or disconnected?

Have you tried going into trouble shoot mode? Power on and immediately power off and on 3 times then power on should bring you to troubleshoot mode. If screen works then your screen is fine. If not its bios at best but most likely hardware meaning the screen is bad
