In regards to the 5.0.0 firmware update:
For those who don't watch Spawn Wave, he explains much of what is happening beneath the surface.

Much of this update was new hacker-proofing. Which Nintendo takes seriously, especially if they're hoping for a secure and stable online network.

Fascinating. I'm still hoping for a flash cart type mod, hopefully that'll be easier to implement over a full firmware jailbreak.
