Haven't bought the game planning to today for my step son wondered what's the difference between ark survival an ark survival explorers edition?

The explorers edition includes a cloth map of the island (the default map) and a hard copy book of all the dino dossiers from within the game. Not all the details in game match real world so It may be a little misleading for your son. I'd suggest just getting the game.

I believe you just get new skins in game, which really isn't worth a dollar extra. I suggest just get the regular hard copy of the game.
