Help! I just got rocket league for switch . A friend has it for xb1. We were able to play a game together through a private match . My question is this: is there anything I can do to make in game chat possible?

I believe you'll need to use an outside service if you wanna do that like phone or discord.

I'd recommend Skype on Mobile because Xbox One has a Skype app on it.

Discord is a very good option as well. Superb voice chat and runs the same on Windows/Mobile
