FINALLY THE WAIT IS OVER:
Splatoon 2 came in the post today. Also the chat is initiated by entering the lobby in the game and then pushed to your phone/tablet app. The chat audio comes out your mobile device (speaker/Bluetooth headset) and the game audio comes out the Switch. You don't need the Hori adapter - it's only meant for chat/game audio to come out of one device.
I always use Bluetooth anyway and have my game sounds from my home cinema. So the app setup is cool for me.
